Every once in awhile something so magnificent falls into your lap you wonder how did the stars align for me to find this? Quite remarkably it is the best gift that somehow the universe knew I needed.
Let me explain without sounding dramatic, rather give the facts.
There are few people in this world you love more than your mother or father and of course children, unconditionally!
There was a life event in 2017 that took our mother from us just before the holidays. It was her favourite time of year. While the prognosis was grim and she fought hard, there had been a medical mistake that affected her chances of survival or the possibility of a bone marrow transplant that could save her life at 65. Which I still think is young, just like she acted.
First, I will preface this by saying doctors and nurses are human and we all make mistakes.
My Mom was coding in the middle of the night and I was sleeping next to her in the hospital room, she was on her second round of chemotherapy fighting leukaemia. After she stabilized, let me tell you about the infectious disease doctor who had to tell me the news with tears in his eyes as he kept hanging his head almost in shame. This doctor explains to me how he does not understand how this could happen and apologizes followed by showing me the documents of her treatments being ordered but not given in error. I can tell you the first stage is anger and it does not go away for years.
Until now…
I uncovered the story of “Ali” - Mo Gawdat’s son. Mo was the Chief Business Officer for GoogleX
In the first chapter I read the words "Khalas ya papa" , I think my heart actually stopped because these were actually the last words (translated) my mother spoke to me! "It's Over"
Ali also succumbed to a medical error from a routine hospital surgery. You see some mistakes cost more than others and as it would turn out, both Mo’s family and my family have something in common, we had to learn how to forgive and understand finding a way forward to embrace happiness again and not assign blame to medical professionals who statistically most of the time get it right and signed up to help people.
I am grateful this Christmas season for finding this book. A gift, Mo wrote about his son Ali.
If you have suffered a tragedy or need help finding happiness, this could help!
Happiness is a choice, all people make mistakes and connection is all around us.
Wishing you an amazing Christmas season however you celebrate!
